BEING LEAN FOR DISTRIBUTORSHIPS IS JUST AS HEALTHY AS BEING PHYSICALLY LEAN IS FOR THE
people who make them run. LEAN came out of the quality movement of which the late Edwards Deming
was a guiding light. Some aspects of the quality movement, while valuable, can be a bit arcane and
intimidating (consider the idea of “Six Sigma blackbelts”). LEAN concepts, by contrast, are intensely
practical and can offer benefits to virtually any company.
Spoiler alert: LEAN is not all about cutting. Rather, it is about making processes in the business work
better and waste less. The benefits can be big. Furthermore, the increased throughput and customer
satisfaction facilitated by LEAN has been known to drive sales growth well above industry averages.
