“Industry training has helped me prepare for almost every promotion I’ve received.”
—SHAWN SCHALK, branch manager,
Springfield Electric Supply, East Peoria, Ill.
During his time at Springfield Electric Supply, Shawn Schalk has experienced many “aha”
moments when it comes to training,
and notes that most of them “have
been centered around management
and motivation of our associate owners.” Here, he shares his thoughts on
how industry training has benefited
his own career:
How has industry training helped
advance your career? EPEC Bronze,
Silver, and Gold assisted with advancements from the counter to
inside and outside sales. CEP certification helps set me apart from
my competitors. I attended two YET
[now LEAD] conferences and a
Branch Management Bootcamp, all
of which provided invaluable training
and networking opportunities. Lastly,
Branch Management University—
which Springfield has been using
as the cornerstone of its training for
identified future branch manager
candidates—helped me with my current position.
How does Springfield encourage
staff to complete industry training?
Springfield provides encouragement
through full payment of tuitions as
well as offering in-house study time
to help complete training. It also offers a monetary bonus for students
who complete their assigned EPEC
levels within a given period of time.
